The famous Chicken Rice Ball at Kedai Kopi Chung Wah in Malacca |
I went to Malacca last month for a short weekend getaway trip with my family members. We have been planning for a short trip to help clear our mind after a busy first half of the year. We have decided to try some of the famous hawker food in Malacca, like the famous chicken rice ball at the Kedai Kopi Chung Wah which is located at 18, Jalan Hang Jebat, 75200 Melaka.
One must not help but notice that it's quite an old coffee shop and like most famous hawker food, we only come to enjoy the food rather than the ambient of the place, well definitely it's not the most comfortable place to dine in. My advice is, go there as early as possible; like around 10am since it starts operate at that time to avoid long queue under the hot sun and the disappointment of not having the taste of the chicken rice ball when it is sold out.
Since we are aware of this, this place was our second agenda during the short getaway and we still queue quite some time before we are seated. I like the process of queuing outside of the shop rather than you try grab your own seat because some who are more polite will end up leaving the shop after all the tables taken up by others and this way, the people who come first will be served first.
They will decide how many chicken meat you will get depending on how many people on that table and each one of us will be served a plate of the famous chicken rice ball (five pieces per plate). I would assume that you can add-on later if you are not full, but to us it's sufficient. We were served with two chickens and a plate of chicken internal organs (not everyone like, but I'm ok with it).
I like the chicken rice ball....and although some might argue is just the chicken rice served differently, it is not really that case. The chicken rice ball texture is really smooth and I do believe many people come just to enjoy the smoothness of the chicken rice ball. The chicken meat on the other hand is quite ordinary, the meat being a bit rough and not so tender and I can say there are other places which serve chicken way better; but then again, the goal here is to test the chicken ice ball.
Overall, I would rate the chicken rice ball quite high, although for the chicken I think it's just average or maybe even below average. I feel that for those who has yet to taste the chicken rice ball, I think it is worth the wait, but if you want to try it again, well, I think there are other places around the Johnkor Street that you can try it without having to queue under the hot sun.
